Inspiration...
It fascinates me to alter and transform a simple shape, capturing the energy and movement within.I am influenced by natural formations but predominantly it is my own personal experimentation with the plastic quailities of the clay and the wheel process which lead me to question, contemplate, resolve and create.
I hand throw a unique range of contemporary kitchenware in a fine white porcelain. Form is the most important element for me to consider when making. By combining soft, fluid sculptural forms with functionallity I create a bridge between function and fine art.
Backround....
I first became interested in working in clay while attending the Limerick School of Art and Design. In 1998 I completed my Diploma in Ceramic Product Design with High Merit and following this moved to Thomastown,Co.Kilkenny. I attended the Crafts Council of Ireland's Pottery Skills Course in Thomastown and after one year of intense professional training I acquired the necessary skills as a potter to work as a full-time production thrower.
I spent the next number of years working in Irish pottery studios such as Michael Kennedy’s Pottery,Co Galway and Castle Arch Pottery, Kilkenny.
Following this in 2003 I took some time out to travel. In New Zealand I worked with a second generation potter by the name of Paul Laird. Here I had the opportunity to work in Paul's studio as well create my own work for sale in the gallery. This experience inspired me to work towards developing my own style with clay and having my own studio and gallery .I also had the wonderful experience to work on board The Coral Princess Cruise ship which travelled the Carribean route .I ran this 'Pottery @ Sea Program ' successfully for six months after which ,in 2005,I returned to Ireland.
It was at this time I attended the second year of the new 'Pottery Design and Skills Course' in Thomastown. This was established to provide skilled potters an oppurtunity to develope their design skills and to set up and run a ceramic studio of their own.In 2006 I graduated with Distinction and won a number of Awards for my ceramic designs.
In 2007 I began working to establish Earthworks Ceramic Studio and Gallery with fellow potters Oonagh Anderson and Caroline Dolan .Earthworks Ceramic Studio and Gallery was officially opened August 19, 2007 by Gus Mableson(Course Director, Crafts Council of Ireland, Pottery Design and Skills Course).
